LATIN AMERICAN STUDENT ASSOCIATION (LASO)

Acting first as a critical addition to the representation of Brazilian students as a board member and social media coordinator in 2019, I was able to bring new ideas to the board that helped us create a more inclusive culture and a more serious and respectable image as I continued as a board member for 2020 and became president in the pandemic year (first non-Spanish speaking president of the club).
In order to remain relevant and active over the pandemic and remote semester, I focused on a lot of planning and rethinking structural problems that held back the biggest club in UBCO from being more successful. We shifted our focus to a greater online presence that stood out from other clubs due to its identity we carefully crafted and its presence in students' lives, when no other club was doing anything, we grew almost 400 followers that summer, something unprecedented for any club at UBCO.

LASO's Student Experience Guide

Because the university was struggling to integrate students into communities even before COVID, we wanted to prioritize the guidance and transition to online learning for students, those transitioning from high school, and those who were struggling with these changes already in university. With that intention, together with the Global Engagement Office, we were able to reach out to students through events and email to answer questions and direct them to resources both on and off campus, focusing on providing the student experience that the university failed to disclose or orient them around, especially those who were distant. From my understanding, there is nothing like this in the university until today, making it a valuable resource for both students and the institution
